Lewisham Council wins GLA home building funding bid

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has today announced that local authorities, suffering from years of Government cuts, will receive a share of his new £10m fund to help deliver more council homes.

Lewisham Council have been awarded £525,000 by the GLA from the Homebuilding Capacity Fund to ensure future growth and investment within the borough is properly planned with a particular focus on delivering a new generation of council homes.

The successful bid covers three key areas which enable the council to create a dedicated multi-disciplinary team to speed up and expand on our ambitious programme of delivering new council housing for the borough.

The funding will also contribute to the production of a place making strategy for the central spine of the borough from Lewisham Town Centre to Bellingham and Downham. The study will look at options to improve public transport accessibility, walking and cycling, improvements to green infrastructure, improvements to local centres along the route as well as looking at potential development sites.

Finally, the funding will also contribute towards suburban improvement within Downham and Bellingham.

This is a fantastic news for our ambitious commitment to deliver 1,000 social homes by 2022. Over the last nine years we have seen our budget slashed by central government and so although this funding won’t reverse all those cuts it’s a very welcome boost for our homebuilding programme.
